Colts vs. Saints – A Heart Divided

Tonight marks the kickoff of the NFL regular season with the Indianapolis Colts taking on the New Orleans Saints in Indianapolis. The question nagging my brain for days now is who will I root for? After all, my family and I have been Colts fans for many years and were over the moon when they finally won it all last season.

When my son was in second grade and had to choose someone to research and dress up as for Living History Day—his choice was Peyton Manning. (Neil Armstrong ran a close second.)

When I made a quick trip to Indianapolis this summer, I made sure to stock up on Colts apparel for the whole family.

But the Saints—let me tell you about the Saints.

I grew up right across the lake from New Orleans in the 80s and 90s. Those were the days of the ‘Aints… when the Superdome would be filled (well maybe not filled) with spectators wearing paper bags over their heads. Yet still we cheered, just hoping ole’ Bobby Hebert would bring us a good season.

Watching the Saints’ success last year with the addition of Drew Brees and Reggie Bush brought healing to the soul. No paper bags or sounds of boos last season, just chants of “Deuce, Deuce” whenever the star running back made a great play. What a beautiful thing to witness.

So tonight, I will remain torn between the two. Who will I cheer for? Well, a bit for both of the teams I’m sure. But, ultimately, since Peyton Manning is my fantasy football quarterback, I may have to cheer for the Colts just a little bit more.

Check out our selection of Indianapolis Colts merchandise, which includes a Peyton Manning wall clock. Also browse our New Orleans Saints merchandise, where there’s not a single ‘Aints paper bag in sight.

I think I’ll go for the Saints, even if my fantasy running back is Joseph Addai of the Indianapolis Colts. But his roots are Louisiana and LSU all the way, so I’m sure he won’t mind my pulling for the Saints.

I too am going to have to go for the Saints, even though the Colts are one of my favorite teams. Having grown up in Louisiana watching the Saints’ bad years, I think the Saints are due.

Son,Peyton: Father Archie
In Archie’s era, an often-heard slogan among the Ms. & La. workforce was: “We don’t work while Archie plays! The Louisiana legislature, after two unsuccessful outings against Archie and Ole Miss, passed a tongue-in-cheek law ordering Archie to refrain from maligning the LSU football team!
Had Archie signed with a better team, he surely would now be in pro-football’s Hall of Fame.
Peyton is a horse of a different color. He has leadership abilities far above those of Archie, but lacks the Archie elusiveness (else he was correctly advised by his father to refrain from scrambling.) Anyway, his talents are there for all to witness, and rate. Barring injury, and given 5 more years in the league with Indy‘s newly-found defense, I would expect Peyton will set many more records, some that may never be broken. His most important accomplishment to this date might be his exciting style and the millions of new fans he has brought into the game, included among those most importantly to me, my wife and four daughters!

I didn’t know some of those things about Archie. My family moved to Louisiana a bit after his time. I agree he may have found more success with a different team.

How awesome that your wife and FOUR! daughters are football fans too. My fantasy football team is named “Girlz Rule”. I’m betting your girls would agree with that!

Sorry David and Jayfro. The Saints just couldn’t get much going Thursday night. I would have liked to see them do better, but I have no complaints about the fantasy points Peyton gave me.
