Dale Earnhardt Jr. Leaves Number 8 Behind

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Racing CarThe No. 8 that Dale Earnhardt Jr. chose for his car in 1999 when entering the NASCAR Cup Series will not follow him into 2008.

It’s been reported that Dale’s new team at Hendrick Motorsports was unable to come to an agreement with DEI (Dale Earnhardt Inc.) to bring his number of the past 8 years along with him. As of next season, the number that Dale Earnhardt Jr. chose to honor his grandfather, is a thing of the past.

My first thought was “do the teams actually own the numbers”? I was able to find out that they do not. The numbers are actually leased through NASCAR and apparently DEI had the first right of refusal. Sounds like the financial number wasn’t high enough to warrant their refusing it.

So it’s time to move on and it appears that a new look will be in order for Earnhardt beginning next season.

We’ve all grown accustomed to seeing him in the red No. 8 car, so it will be interesting to see what changes come to the car along with the change in number.

I think I’ll miss the familiar sight of Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the usual red No. 8 car. But with the move over to Hendrick Motorsports and a new, yet to be announced sponsor, maybe it’s time to look the part of starting afresh.

What do you think? Will you miss his current car or be glad for something new? Express your opinion by leaving a comment below.

Thanks for the reference to your article.

We’ll see how well they do with a new look for the new season. Whether good or bad, it’ll definitely give NASCAR fans something to talk about for a little while.
